FINALLY available again on DVD!
"The Spitfire Grill" is a powerful story about redemption and coming to terms with your past.
Percy Talbot has just been released after serving five years in a Maine prison. She decides to live in Giliad, in western Maine, because of its unique rock formations and scenic beauty. What she doesn't realize is that people who live in such a small town tend to be suspicious of outsiders, especially those that have spent time in prison.
Without giving away too much, I can say that this is a well-written story, with memorable characters. The cast is exceptional: Alison Elliott is perfectly cast as Percy. Ellen Burstyn, Marcia Gay Harden, and Will Patton are brilliant, as always. And the scenery is truly beautiful, even though it was filmed in Vermont and not Maine.
I would highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys character-driven dramas that will make you laugh and cry. This movie is now available through Warner Archive for a reasonable price, so...
Wonderful Movie
This was a great film about second chances and not judging people without knowing them. This movie was about friendship without judgment and how one person can make a difference to a community.
Hidden Gem
The Spitfire Grill is one of those lovely films that didn't get a lot of attention in its brief onscreen life and deserves to be seen more than once. Beyond being an excellent story with a perfect cast, there are multiple layers of life happening in this small New England town that can touch each of us in our own stories. Our quiet biases and judgmental attitudes, our empathy, and our quiet fears are all represented in a way that resonates deeply. See it several times and notice new things at each viewing.
